We passed under & through the portico of St. Peters a dozen times. Quite literally one has to stop and actually visually comprehend what one is seeing in St. Peters let alone all the other chisea we entered. Seeing is so difficult because one is instantly overwhelmed with the scale and magnificence of the edifices. My technique was to sit down and absorb the place first, look around slowly, and finally get up and walk around until some combination of objects, colors or shapes stopped me. The vault of St. Peters stopped me.
