Artist's Description

Angie Dickinson's co-star Robert Mitchum is conferring with "Young Billy Young's" director Burt Kennedy (1922-2001).

The ex-vaudevillian (member of his parent's act "The Dancing Kennedy's) had been a contract writer with John Wayne's Batjac Productions for years.

As Duke aged he became increasingly cranky. Kennedy wrote "The Train Robbers" (1973) and also directed Duke in the opus. Six years earlier he had directed Duke and Kirk Douglas in "The War Wagon."

Kennedy had experience working with unpleasant film people. He was one of a handful of interviewers who was able to peek behind the veil of venom that John Ford erected when interviewed, es...

About David Lee Guss

David Lee Guss

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
