Description
SAND KEY LIGHTHOUSE
Offshore Florida Keys
Atlantic Ocean
Flying low and slow is one way to view the Florida Key Lighthouses. Sand Key light, built in 1827, marks a channel, which leads into Key West harbor and lies just offshore. The small amount of sandy reef is constantly changing shape and the reefs around this area abound with all sorts of sea creatures and fish. This tower is designed with a skeleton framework of iron pilings, which exhibit less wind and water resistance against the gales, and hurricanes, which are notorious in this area. Unlike the northern screwpile lighthouses, which succumbed to moving ice in the northern winters, these profiles can be seen all along the keys.
