Sunflower stem. Light micrograph of a section through a young stem from a sunflower (Helianthus annuus), showing the tissues within one of the many vascular bundles. From left to right: collenchyma tissue (yellow and violet) for flexible support; cortex of parenchyma tissue (red and blue); long thick-walled supportive cells (yellow and green); long thin-walled cells of the phloem sieve tubes; companion cells (red and blue); xylem vessels: annual, spiral, and pitted vessels that carry water and minerals to the stem (yellow and light blue); and lastly the pith, composed of parenchyma tissue (deep blue). Magnification: x37, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
