Description
"The Sibyl Agrippina", by Abraham Janssens c.1600
The Sibyls have been regarded as divine seers since Classical Antiquity, and their prophesies were interpreted as heralding the Epiphany in Early Christian times. In Medieval times, Sibyl Agrippina, the Egyptian, and Sibyl Europaea were added to bring the total number of female prophets to 12 in accordance with the Old Testament's 12 male prophets. Her portrayal as a black woman can be linked to the increased availability of black models in the Netherlands as a result of the growing slave trade.
This is a faithful reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art.
