This outcropping of granite in Yosemite was one of my first watercolor after returning to CA. I was trying to make an interesting composition, almost abstract design using these granite rocks as subject matter. 1975.

'Definitely vibration; the design is one of action. The horizontal stone formations shoot out at you from left to right, from upper left, dominating comfortably the entire composition, their crisp roundness contrasting with the soft wet in wet distant trees. The almost white vertical column at upper left in the trees allows a singular escape as the eye scans the rocks, then the trees, then that white area to escape, giving the eye, in the entire composition, plenty to enjoy and do. The earth tones aren't too bright or too red or too orange, so it has a quiet subtlety to it, imparting a graceful power to the piece..
