Description
2M1207b exoplanet, illustration. This Jupiter-like planet is a gas giant and about four times as massive as Jupiter, making it a 'super-Jupiter'. It orbits several billion kilometres from its parent star, a brown dwarf star. The planet and star are 170 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Centaurus. Observations by the Hubble Space Telescope detected the infrared glow from this planet, which rhythmically flickers as its spins on its axis. This is thought to be due to clouds in the planet's atmosphere. The planet rotates on its axis around once every 10 hours. Artwork published in 2016.
