Description
Asphalt lake. Recovered asphalt being loaded into a truck, which will take it away for processing. On the left is a digger recovering asphalt from the surface of the lake. The vehicles can drive on the lake's asphalt surface for a few hours in the morning, before it begins to melt in the sun. Sir Walter Raleigh is credited with discovering this lake in 1595, which is the largest deposit of asphalt in the world. It covers a surface area of approximately 360, 000 square metres. Asphalt is a semi-solid substance composed of bitumen and other inert mineral matter, which is used in road-surfacing. Photographed at La Brea, Trinidad.
