Description
Blast furnace. Water wheel at the restored Hopewell Furnace, Union Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA. Built in 1759, the furnace is the brick structure at right (see C019/1602). Here, the water wheel and blowing tubes have been restored. Dating from 1951, this photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The collection consists of historical photographs of blast furnaces used in the iron and steel industry. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen, with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon).
