"The Big Trail" was simultaneously shot in five versions: the 70mm Grandeur version for showing in large theaters, a standard 35 mm version for general release, and three other versions in French, German and Spanish. The last three were filmed with largely different actors.

Duke did not attempt to speak phonetically as Laurel & Hardy did with their first talkies, which were shorts, not features.

In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years.
