This is a great picture. Shout out to John Boyd on his photography. The mig of this however is blurry and I’m disappointed. The original picture is not blurry, so I’m not sure why the print is.

This mug came out great. It’s a gift for my Dad. Thank you John Boyd and fine Arts America.

I love the mug because of the photo, the color I chose and the mug size. The only negatives are that while I knew the photo was small, it's a little too narrow. I have a Marilyn mug that I did not buy online, and it spans the entire mug as two copycat photos. Also, the inside of the mug is not smooth as most mugs are. Otherwise, it's fine, as is its price.

Nice but picture is too narrow to be viewed properly

Artist's Description

John Wayne was noted for his quick wit. When asked on the "Rio Lobo" set where his dressing room was located he replied, "See that nail on the wall?" "Courage is being scared to death - and saddling up anyway." "Money never made an unhappy person happy, and I'll be damned if losing money is going to make me miserable. Hell, it's just money. I can make more." (After going broke on "The Alamo.") "When I started, I knew I was no actor and I went to work on the Wayne thing. It was as deliberate a projection as you'll ever see. I figured I needed a gimmick, so I dreamed up the drawl, the squint, and a way of moving meant to suggest that I wasn't looking for trouble but would just as soon throw a bottle at your head as not." "I've played the kinda man I'd like to have been." When introduced to anyone, well known or not, he replied, "Just call me Duke." Damn, I'm the stuff men are made of!"....John Wayne (1907-1979)

About David Lee Guss

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
