Purchased for a friend whose great-great-grandfather, William Armstrong, was one of the blessed ones who chose a white bean. He loves it, and it has a place of honor next to the photo of his great-great-grandfather above his desk.

I love the canvas. It is a birthday present for someone that fell in love with the original. Unfortunately I have not given it to him as his birthday party is December 3. But I anticipate he will will thrilled.

Artist's Description

Newton's optics, 18th-century diagrams. Optics was one of the subjects studied by English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton (1642-1727). He investigated prisms, lenses, telescopes, and the spectrum of light among other phenomena, with atmospheric optics shown here (centre). He published his results and theories in 'Opticks' (1704). This page is from 'Opera' (1779-85), the collected works of English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton (1642-1727).

About Middle Temple Library

Science Photo Library was founded in 1981 by Michael Marten, one of the authors of "Worlds Within Worlds", a book exploring different ways to observe the universe - from electron micrographs, to images of earthrise taken from the Apollo spacecraft. When Marten started receiving requests for the beautiful images in the book, he had an idea of setting up Science Photo Library. Since then, Science Photo Library has continued to work alongside world acclaimed photographers and the leading science and medical experts to provide a central source of the best science and specialist imagery available. Although the collection started with scientific images, it has grown to encompass all aspects of science and their impact on everyday life.
