Polarised light micrograph of crystals of potassium bitartrate (KC4H5O6) from red wine. These crystals, also known as potassium hydrogen tartrate, form naturally in wine and will precipitate under certain conditions, such as prolonged storage at cold temperatures. Wine crystals may resemble tiny grapenuts, diamonds, or fragments of amber or ruby glass. Magnification: x136 at 10cm wide.
