Description
Heart surgery. Forceps and scissors being used to prepare a woman's heart for linkage to a heart- lung machine during coronary artery bypass surgery. The machine takes over the function of the heart and lungs, allowing the heart to be operated on. Lengths of vein will be taken from her legs and attached to her heart to bypass narrowed or blocked coronary arteries. The coronary arteries supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients. Photographed at The Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, Scotland.
