John Steinbeck was not thinking of rocks when he wrote this sentence in "Travels with Charley - In search of America". However, his feeling exactly reflects what people should think when looking at rock photomicrographs such as in this reportage on rocks from the Italian Alps.

After forming by eruption of basaltic lavas on the floor of an ocean called Tethys, this rock was pinched and squeezed between Europe and Africa during the formation of the Alps, about 100 million years ago. It was buried tens of kilometers deep, where heat and pressure transformed into into a new rock called "blueschist".
This image shows that blueschist are spectacular not only on hand specimen, but also under the microscope.
