Description
Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis is a large orchid native to the forest canopies of Irian Jaya and New Guinea. It is an epiphyte, growing on trees without parasitizing them. Leaves on this species can grow to 48 inches in length. This species produces pseudobulbs and a carrion flower. Carrion flowers emit a pungent odor resembling decaying flesh, to attract flies and carrion beetles. Flies and carrion beetles are the primary pollinators for the plant. Photographed in 2009.
