Who buys a painting of a goat???? Well it turns out I did, as a gift for my sister who recently lost her beloved Nubian Dam "Drama" ( to some weird goat disease). My sister was SO thrilled with the painting! I don't have a photo of where she hung it but I know it was given a place of honor in her home! Thank you so much to the artist Dottie Draco and to Fine Art America for brokering the painting. Will definitely recommend to friend's and family!

Artist's Description

Diatom. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a thalassiosira sp. diatom. Diatoms may be extremely abundant in both freshwater and marine ecosystems; it is estimated that 20% to 25% of all organic carbon fixation on the planet is carried out by diatoms. This is possible because they contain chlorophyll. Diatoms are a major food resource for marine and freshwater microorganisms and animal larvae, and are a major source of atmospheric oxygen. A unique feature of diatom cells is that they are enclosed within a cell wall made of silica (hydrated silicon dioxide) called a frustule. Magnification: x1500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Specimen courtesy of Mike Allen, Plymouth Marine Laboratory.

About Steve Gschmeissner/science Photo Library

Science Photo Library was founded in 1981 by Michael Marten, one of the authors of "Worlds Within Worlds", a book exploring different ways to observe the universe - from electron micrographs, to images of earthrise taken from the Apollo spacecraft. When Marten started receiving requests for the beautiful images in the book, he had an idea of setting up Science Photo Library. Since then, Science Photo Library has continued to work alongside world acclaimed photographers and the leading science and medical experts to provide a central source of the best science and specialist imagery available. Although the collection started with scientific images, it has grown to encompass all aspects of science and their impact on everyday life.
