White Sands National Monument. Trail marker on a sand dune in White Sands National Monument, Chihuahuan Desert, New Mexico, USA. White Sands comprises the southern part of a 712 square kilometres field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. It is the largest gypsum dune field in the world. Without these trail markers the shifting sands would erase any signs of the trails.
