Description
Photo © 2017 Susan Wiedmann. After a successful courtship, the male Brandt’s Cormorant (Phalacrocorax penicillatus) selects a nesting spot and brings his mate materials for it from the nearby ocean. She then proceeds to build the nest, with just a little help from him. It is their version of a human female making most of the decorating decisions.
Both parents will feed their babies, which can range from two to five chicks.
Privacy is not important for these birds, which are found along the West Coast of the United States. They nest in close proximity to other Brandt’s Cormorants, as this couple did on the rock jetty at Monterey’s Coast Guard Pier. At that location, they are often seen nesting not far from sea lions that also use the rocks to raise their young.
The brilliant blue eyes and throats of both Brandt’s Cormorants in this photo confirm it is their breeding season. When it is over the colors will fade dramatically.
