Description
A close-up from the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-mer in northwestern France allows us to read the words inscribed on so many of the markers there: "Here rests in honored glory a comrade in arms known but to God". The rows of simple white marble Latin crosses and stars of David mark the graves of over 9000 young Americans who died in Europe in World War II, most in the D-Day invasion and the days following it. This black and white photo is accompanied by a quotation from Admiral Chester Nimitz: "They fought together as brothers in arms, they died together and now they sleep side by side. To them, we have a solemn obligation."
