Description
A group of Double Crested Cormorants were perched on a little green boat in Sarasota Bay, looking very much like they were on a Cormorant cruise - especially with one at the bow as a lookout and the other at the stern to steer. This picture was taken in the downtown Sarasota part of Sarasota Bay, but in the Lido Key area of the bay, they have developed a very unusual habit of following kayakers and often sitting on the kayak as the kayaker paddles along. Locals have said this behavior is limited to the Lido Key area of the bay where there are lots of kayakers, and is not observed elsewhere. It's thought the paddles stir up the water, making it easier to catch fish.
Cormorants are diving birds that use their feet and sometimes their wings to propel themselves underwater in pursuit of their meals. When they have finished fishing, they can be seen perched somewhere near the water with their wings spread open to air dry.
The original photograph has been watercolored by the photographer/artist, using several layers of digital techniques. The artwork is signed and year-dated by the artist. Another version of this same piece, but with softer colors, is available in this same gallery. See which one you like best!
