Description
πI would love for you to view more of my bird photography, in my "Desert Birds-Arizona" Collectionπ
Ah, the cactus wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus), the largest wren in the United States. This State Bird of Arizona, since 1931, is one of the signature birds found in the Sonoran Desert. It's common name comes from its frequent use of saguaro and cholla cacti as nesting sites, which provide protection to both young and roosting adults.
I guess that's why this desert dweller has made my home (situated on an acre of natural desert flora), its home. They readily build their nests, resembling a football in size and shape, with a tunnel-like entrance, built in my varieties of Cholla Cactus. They are made of coarse grass, feathers, plant fibers, flowers (a woman's touch you know), string, and even pieces of fabric they might find. You will have to check out my photograph of them, in "My Home Sweet Home" gallery, or "Desert Birds-Arizona."
As they leave the safety of their nest, they go clambering and scrambling about in the open, foraging on the ground in and around my desert flora. Males fly to high perches, calling in rough scratchy voices (as if to say, "go away, this is my place). It is one of the most characteristic sounds of the Sonoran Desert.
In my desert garden of joy, that perch would be at the top of my ocotillos, as pictured here. Getting a bird's-eye-view, a lay of the land. It serves us both, as it is "A High Point In My Day," as well as for the Cactus Wren.
