This cattle egret takes a quick flight across a pasture in southeastern Pasco County, Florida near Crystal Springs on a warm July 3, 2016 summer day hoping to find a spot with more insects. The cattle egret (bubulcus ibis) can be found in grassy fields, pastures and savannahs around the world in tropical and subtropical climates. Originally from Africa and Asia, it made its way to northeastern South America in 1877 and spread throughout the Americas from there. They can be found as far north in North American as Alaska and Newfoundland and as far south in South America as Argentina. You will see them in Central America and the caribbean also.
It is a stocky bird with a short, thick neck and short yellow legs. Their yellow bill is shorter and thicker than that of other herons and egrets. They are all white except during breeding season when They have yellowish orange plumes on the top of their heads, and some on their chest and back. The smallest of the egrets it measures from 18" to 22" in length with a wingspan between 34.6" and 37.8."
