Description
When I set out to fulfil a request to create an embellished, fabric Tribute to the magnificent Maasai (an ancient, nomadic tribe whose traditional lands lie in both Kenya and Tanzania), the only thing that I really knew about the Maasai at the time was that they had a particular affection for the colour red. Bright, bold, vibrant, life-giving red. Me, too and/or what a grand place to start!!
I had a gorgeous time creating this piece: designing it; selecting just-the-right fabrics (most from Kenya and Tanzania) and choosing just-the-right embellishments (incl. a variety of metal charms/bells/buttons from Kenya) for it, etc.,etc. When I couldn't source certain embellishments - ie. miniature Maasai-like battle shields and miniature Maasai-like necklaces, etc. - I used wire and beads, etc. to make them myself.
