Description
Pieces in this series focus on scenes and objects in nature, which are specifically identified in the title - in this case, the collar, a circular area of raised bark where a limb was once attached to a live oak tree. From that natural, original photographic element, arises the artist's additional interpretations through creative abstract digital exploration.
Where a limb has been downed in a storm or lopped off in pruning, the remaining wood takes on unique patterns from weathering. The inspiration for this art piece was a live oak tree, a name given to a number of unrelated oaks common in the southern United States. All are large, strong trees with a spreading canopy, often festooned with Spanish moss.
While abstract art doesn't specifically represent external reality, but exists somewhat independently of it and may seek to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures, it can, as in the case of this art piece, take specific realistic elements as springboards for creative excursions - emotionally and metaphorically.
