African pygmies. 19th-century artwork of two members of the Aka people (also called Bayaka or BaAka) being exhibited at the German Geographical Congress in Stuttgart, Germany. The BaAka are a nomadic people of the Western Congo Basin in Central Africa, part of the wider grouping of Mbenga people, historically called pygmies. These two are from the Uele basin in what would later become the Belgian Congo. Tales of pygmy peoples were known from classical times, but the first authenticated report was by the German explorer Georg Schweinfurth, who reached the Uele River in 1870. This woodcut dates from around the 1870s.
