YELLOW AGAVE OR PITA SCIENTIFIC NAME: Agave americana FAMILY: AGAVACEAE It is a perennial plant resistant to arid soils. Only one time blooms in her life and she dies after flowering. It leaves to her death many �hijuelos� or shoots. They are pollinated habitually by bats. This plant was a part of the illustrations of the Iconography Phytanthoza, a nice book of Johann Wilhelm Weinmann, the first botanical illustrator. According to investigators of the Autonomous University of Guadalajara, a compound of the agave might improve radically the treatments for illnesses of the colon. It is known that there are more than 300 species of Agave, but approximately 200 have been now recognized. The plant of Agave has many uses, included the extraction of fibers of her leaves to produce rope, nets and other objects. But perhaps her most well-known use is the production of �tequila�, the alcoholic drink. The Agave is still cultivated for the textile fiber of her lea...

About Maribel Garzon

My interest in painting and shooting nature begins from my professional studies of Biology at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico with assignature on Drawing Applied to Biology by the great Scientific Illustrator and Teacher Aldi de Oyarzbal, one of the founder members of the Mexican Academy of Scientific Illustration. Along with my progress in the scientific area there was always my need to capture nature with its great variety of color and detail which Iead me into the world of the Photography and Microphotography with Science Master Alejandro Martnez Mena at the Microcine Laboratory also at UNAM.
