The graveyard at Heptonstall is so packed that in places it is impossible to slip a cigarette paper between the tombstones. An interesting interment is that of "King" David Hartley, leader of the notorious Cragg Coiners, a counterfeting gang who operated in and around Calderdale in the 18th century. He was hanged at Tyburn Gate, York, on 28th December 1770.
