Description
This is the magnificent Ahu Tongariki ceremonial structure with the largest number of Moai of all the Ahus. As with all the other Ahus, the Moai of Tongariki were knocked down, and the white coral eyes with obsidian pupils were removed so that the mana of the statues was removed. This Ahu also suffered a great tragedy when, in 1960, a tsunami hit the Island and swept all the toppled Moai and the stones that formed the platform like toys far inland.
In the 1990's an team of archaeologists, working in conjunction with a Japanese company to restore the Ahu. Tediously they identified stones from the Ahu and pieces of the Moai, based on photographs from before 1960. Today, all the 15 Moai are now once again standing in the same order they were raised. It is a powerful sight to see.
