The Historic Maritime City of Fairhaven located in Whatcom County, Washington State.
The M. V. (motor vehicle) Columbia, flagship of the Alaska Marine Highway fleet, arrived at the new Fairhaven terminal at 9:30 AM Tuesday October 3, 1989, inaugurating service from Fairhaven (south Bellingham, Washington to Alaska. Pleasure craft, Sea Scout vessel Discovery, fishing vessels, the Coast Guard and a large crowd gathered at the terminal on a crisp, sunny October day to greet Columbia.
The M. V. Columbia was built at Lockheed Shipbuilding of Seattle, WA. At a cost of $20 million. She began service in the summer of 1974. The Columbia is 418 feet long and 85 feet wide, gross tonnage is 3,946. She is driven by two 9200 HP Enterprise diesel engines and has a service speed of 19 knots...
