Mixed Media - Acrylic And Collage On Canvas
Description
This work is an example of what I call “Collaborating with an anonymous artist”. I bought this painting in a thrift store. It was a beach scene with a campfire. I collaged over the triangular shape of the woodpile and added 3 dimensional objects to build it into a more interesting pile. I liked the diagonal lines that emerged so I fortified them further to emphasize the leftward lean. Then I overpainted the original pale orange sky. The only original paint still showing is the tan colored sandy areas below the pile.
This is a seriously mixed-up mash-up ! Materials used in addition to paper images include plastic, styrofoam, string, rubber bands, dental floss, a rubber ear, chewing gum, and a wasp nest (below the ear).
This could also be categorized as a low profile wall sculpture….I used a considerable amount of acrylic gel to attach and surround some of the three dimensional objects, and some areas are almost an inch higher than the canvas.
First Place in the FAA contest Guess What, July 2023
First exhibited at Mercer University in Macon Georgia and the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Selected by jury to be exhibited in the 2016 National Collage Show at Kent State University in Hudson Ohio.

I always appreciate your compliments, Mike….you have the perspective of an artist’s viewpoint, as opposed to the often “old school” academic views of so-called Art Critics…!

You sure have a gift for reeling in the viewers. Love the background color that enhances movement and it reminds me of that tune "Monster Mash" Mike
Douglas Fromm replied:
This is a wonderful comment, Mike !…I had not thought of that crazy novelty song in years, it would make a great title for one of my future mixed-up discombobulated creations… !

Thank you, Anthony ....sometimes everything seems to just fall into place, when this work started I had no idea that it would end up quite this strange !..I was just having fun by letting it grow in whatever direction it seemed to be going ..

AWESOME. I can see this creeping and pulsating in a psychedelic animated music video. Perhaps ventage late Beatles music.... Love it.

Your work is just extraordinary Douglas! I had no idea how powerful and beautiful collage creations could be!
Douglas Fromm replied:
Thank you !.....Collage is indeed a powerful medium due to it’s versatility. It allows my imagination to run free in whatever direction that found objects and found images suggest, especially in mixed media works like this. It is so much fun to create what I call a “Visual Gumbo”, mixing acrylic and paper scraps and 3 dimensional objects - just keep throwing stuff in the pot and stirring till done ! Try it some time !
