Description
ALMA fibre optics panels at ALMA's Array Operations Site (AOS). ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array) is an array of 66 radio antennas located at an elevation of 5000 metres on the arid Chajnantor plateau in the Chilean Andes. Data from the separate antennas is combined by interferometry, making it one of the most powerful telescopes in the world. Fibre optics (using LISA technology) bring the signals from the antennas to the correlator, where they are combined. Initial antenna installation took place in 2008 and 2009. Observations began in late 2011. Photographed in March 2009.
