I couldn't believe my fortune in experiencing this absolutely epic, beautiful sunset on the still waters of the aptly-named Mirror Lake in the Snowy Range mountains of the Medicine Bow National Forest of Wyoming. This fiery alpenglow of vivid orange and red lit up from lingering clouds of a thunderstorm that moved through the area several hours earlier and cast this perfect reflection on the lake which was ringed by early wildflowers (marsh marigolds). From this spot, miles of trails radiate out making for some great hiking adventures.
The Snowy Range is an undiscovered gem in southern Wyoming filled with lakes and craggy mountains where the snow lingers all year and numerous lakes like this invite hiking and exploration. Summer is short here, with snow often not melting out of roads, trails and campgrounds until mid or even late July some years, and starting to close up just a couple of months later when the snow returns in the fall. For a very short time it's a paradise just like this.
