Oregon, southeast, Panoramic of the Alvord Desert Playa with dust devils. The Alvord and other desert playas of southeast Oregon are what's left of a lake system with waters that reached 200 feet in depth. Shorelines from a much wetter era can be spotted as terraces along the edge of the valley. Over tens of thousands of years, the region gradually became drier leaving the hardened salt flats we see today. Depending on weather patterns the flats range from a hard cracked surface to holding shallow water. The large and relatively even surfaces can create a balanced line and form. Professional wildlife, nature and landscape photography designed for wall art. Created by Leland D Howard.
