The adult American Golden Plover (Pluvialis dominica) is a medium-sized plover that has spots of gold and black on its crown, wings and back, black face with white border, black breast and black legs. The adult bird measures about 10.5 inches in length and about 5 ounces in weight. The juvenile American Golden Plover has a prominent supercilium contrasting with a dark cap, an ear spot, spotted nape, grayish wash on its face, grayish belly, dark rump and wings, and speckled plumage particularly on its back. They feed on insects, berries, seeds, and crustaceans in habitats including beaches, fields, tundra, and tidal flats. While they breed in the Arctic tundra, northern Canada and Alaska, they migrate and winter in southern South America on grazed grasslands. Their migratory route extends over 25,000 miles, one of the longest migrations of any bird species!
