Andrew Jackson was the seventh President of the United States 1829 to 1837. He is shown in this painting during War of 1812 at the The Battle of New Orleans. It is copied after a painting by Edward Percy Moran who painted it in 1910. General Andrew Jackson stands on a fort while his troops attack British Highlanders.Jackson gained national fame through his role in the War of 1812.They said he was tough as old hickory wood on the battlefield, and he acquired the nickname of Old Hickory.

During the Revolutionary War, Jackson, at age thirteen, had helped the local militia as a courier. Jackson was captured by the British and held as a prisoner. He nearly starved to death in captivity and when Jackson refused to clean the boots of a British officer, the officer slashed him with a sword. Jackson was left with scars on his left hand and head and he hated the British.
