M31 – The Andromeda Galaxy in the Andromeda constellation
This spiral galaxy is about 135 thousand light years in diameter (visually larger than our own Milky Way galaxy), and it is the largest member of our Local Group of galaxies which includes about 40 galaxies. The nucleus of M31 is thought to be a double nucleus (which is why it appears to be elliptical) and it contains a massive black hole of approximately 30 million solar masses.
