Description
Giant green anemone (Anthopleura xanthogrammica) photographed when the anemone was out of water at low tide near Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach, Oregon. Other anemones (some closed and covered with pieces of shell and pebbles) and acorn barnacles are also in the image. Sea anemones are predatory animals even though they look like plants and are named after a kind of flower. Anemones of this species have photosynthetic algae and dinoflagellates living symbiotically in their tissue that give them their green color and provide them with nutrients. Anemones also get nutrients from small prey they catch using their stinging tentacles.
