Description
Ant plant (Hydnophytum sp.) domatium. Domatium of an ant plant growing on a host tree. Ant plants are epiphytes - they grow on other plants and derive moisture and nutrients from the air. Domatia are tiny chambers produced by plants that house arthropods. They are similar to galls but differ in that they are produced by the plant and not induced by the arthropod inhabitants. Here, the domatium is used to house an ant colony, giving the ant plant its name. Photographed on Mount Silam, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia.
