Description
Designed by Philipp Eckebrecht for his friend, the astronomer Johannes Kepler, this map was intended to be used with Kepler's Tabulae Rudolphinae, a set of tables that described the positions of the planets and included star charts of Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. Eckebrecht honors Brahe by setting the prime meridian on the map running through Brahe's observatory off the coast of Sweden. The equator indicates the hours to be added or subtracted for determining longitude. The emblem of the double-headed eagle, representing the Holy Roman Empire, honors Emperor Rudolf II. The map is also one of the earliest to portray the northwestern coast of Australia.
