Description
On the left side of the marble block, an apobates (hoplite-athlete) mounts a moving chariot. He is wearing a helmet and a cuirass over a short chiton and carrying a shield. In front of the next chariot's horses, stand a groom wearing a short chiton and a chlamys (cape) fastened with a brooch. He is holding the left hand horse by the reins. Acropolis Museum, Athens. The Parthenon sculptures are a collection of Classical Greek sculptures from the friezes of the metopes from the temple of Athena. Mostly sculptures were made by Phedias and his pupils. Over fifty percent of the marbles are in the Acropolis Museum in Athens. A few sculptures can still be seen on Parthenon. The rest marbles are removed into the British Museum, in Louvre and in Copenhagen as a result of looting by Elgin.
