This acrylic on canvas painting shows a murder of crows above a red sea. Waves crest orange, yellow, white above the red water, and the sky over the horizon is bright, clean white. The black silhouettes of numerous crows, flocking, appear to be flying off the top right corner of the painting, save for the back of the flock: these crows can be seen to be either diving, or tumbling, into the sea.

This painting was born in a moment of panic about the state of the world. The red sea represents apocalypse. The white sky represents salvation, and the hope of rising above, to a better future. The crows are symbols of the natural world, as well as our connections among each other and to the earth.

I am Ruth Elaine Hovekamp, writer and artist. I live in Eugene, Oregon, surrounded by culture, color, and earth-loving people. I've lived in Oregon since the age of four, and I did most of my growing in the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon. It is from the Grande Ronde Valley and its fairy-tale wilderness surroundings that I get a lot of my inspiration for my artwork. The sky is massive out there, and the piney, mountainous planet beneath it is in an endless stretch: reaching for that atmosphere, and never making it. With this environment as a foundation, and an active imagination that delights in fantasy and astrology, I began to find myself leaning toward a surrealistic, intergalactic niche.
