One of the there Apollo 11 astronauts is heisted into a recovery helicopter above the spacecraft’s splashdown point, 900 miles southwest of Hawaii. Astronauts neil Armstrong , Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin, splashed down at 12.50 p. m. EDT JULY 24, 1969, eight days after they began man’s first lunar landing mission. They were flown 13 miles to the prime recovery ship, the USS Hornet, where they were greeted by president Richard m. mixen.
