Arachne was a mortal weaver in Ancient Greece who was very good, but also very boastful. She claimed her work was more skill than that of Athena herself. In a direct contest with Athena, her work was so good that Athena was thrown in to a rage and struck her. Rather than bow to Athena, the girl hung herself. In pity Athena loosened the rope and turned it into a web and the girl into a spider.
