The Arc de Triomphe stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, also known as the Place de lEtoile (Star Square). Designed by Jean Chalgrin between 1806 and 1836, the 51 meter high, 45-meter wide monument is the second largest triumphal arch in existence. It honors those who fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars.
