Description
Oscar Romero, Archbishop of El Slvador from 1977 until his assassination by a right-wing death squad in 1980, gave his life for his people and for the cause of Christ in this world. He died a victim of poltics, killed by those who considered him a poltical enemy, but he himself was no creature of politics, simply a follower of Christ and a wonderful example of the servant leadership taught by Jesus. His cause for sainthood is in process at the Vatican. Romero is pictured in a central image area that breaks out into the framing border of the picture which is made up of symbols associated with the violent politics of his time and place (AK-47s and M-16s; the American white star and the Communist red star). Featured prominently on the Archbishop's vestments is a symbol of the Eucharist.
To the left and right of the figure is a border of passion flowers emblematic of the Archbishop's sacrifice.
