Description
Despite being Andy Warhol's favorite painter, American painter, designer, Jazz Age saloniste and poet Florine Stettheimer (1871–1944) remained a peripheral figure in twentieth century American art until recently. Over the past few decades, however, her work has grown in popularity, and her paintings command high prices at auction. This gloriously colorful and quirky evocation of New Jersey beach resort Asbury Park is one of her best-known works, and typifies her charmingly 'naive' modernist style. Four of Stettheimer's paintings from her Cathedral series - the Cathedrals of Wall Street, Broadway, Fifth Avenue and Art - are now part of the permanent collection of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.
