Asian citrus psyllid nymph development. Sequence showing the development stages of a Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) nymph. This insect transmits the bacteria that causes citrus greening disease. Also known as huanglongbing (HLB), this disease causes mottled leaves and small, bitter fruits that remain partly green even when ripe. There is no cure. Nymphs can acquire the disease just before reaching the adult stage and can immediately transmit the disease to uninfected trees. In contrast, an adult that is not infected with HLB must feed on an infected tree for many days before it becomes infected with the bacterium.
