Description
Wild ponies now on Assateague Island are the descendants of those orginally marooned there in the 1600's. There are about 300 of them, their condition monitored by the National Park Service. Assateague is a barrier island about 37 miles long, divided between Virginia and Maryland. The ponies are comfortable with the presence of people -- but in no way tame.
