This oil painting is the first in a series I have done to represent the threat of global warming to the survival of the ice caps and the world itself. The painting is dominated by an adult penguin leaning protectively over its chick. They are alone one of many tiny fragments of an iceberg, seemingly embraced by what is left of the vast Antarctic ice sheets. What is their chance of survival? Probably not much. What is our chance of surviving the global furnace we are creating by our fossil fuel (et al.) emissions that are destroying the ozone layer. Here, as with many of my other paintings, I attempt to bring my viewers into a dialogue about grave environmental issues with a (seemingly) benign representation of nature.

I’m just a self-taught artist who likes to break rules. I broke them in the scholarship I did when I was still a college professor—and was called on my transgressions. As a child I (apparently) broke them when my secondary school art teacher told me in no uncertain terms that I simply could not mix the representational and the abstract. (Now who in Europe had been causing a sensation in the art scene for half a generation when she told me this: Picasso and Miró, to name just two.) In any event, her censure didn’t take.
